Old Sugar Mill of Bajo Aragón

Industrial complex of 9.7 hectares in La Puebla de Híjar, Teruel.

Founded in 1912, the Lower Aragon Sugar Mill was one of the most important sugar beet production plants in Spain and the driving force behind the entire economy of Puebla de Hijar. Today, the old land and industrial buildings of the sugar factory are expanded by an impressive 97,000 m².

This extension comprises two blocks of industrial buildings with a total surface area of 3,160 m² and a total surface area of 4,712 m². The main block is made up of 5 terraced naves, with a total surface area of 3,152 m2 and dimensions of 64 m long by 48.5 m wide, with a maximum props of 6.6 m. The warehouses have 4 overhead cranes of between 5 and 10 tons, in addition to an office section. There are two large truck accesses, 5 to 7 m wide and 4 m high, as well as side accesses and one at the bottom of each warehouse, which are useful for loading trucks.

The secondary block is made up of two semi-detached naves and has a total surface area of 1,560 m² and dimensions of 60 m long by 26 m wide, with a maximum prop of 8 m. This includes four 4, 5 and 10 tonne overhead cranes, plus a small office. There are two large truck accesses between 5 and 7 m wide and 4 m high.

In the complex of the former Sugar Mill of Lower Aragon there is an open-air storage area of approximately 30,000 m². The industrial complex is connected to its own 520 m long railway line that connects with the Spanish railway system through the La Puebla de Hijar train station. This branch is located right next to the field and between the two blocks of ships. Ideal for loading and unloading large components.

Today, more than 100 years after its inauguration, this enormous industrial complex is still an imposing brand in Aragon, as well as one of the best equipped industrial infrastructures in the whole region, with all the modern municipal services: road access, sidewalks, electricity supply, water and sanitation.

According to the data of the Aragonese chronicler and professor Luis Germán Zubero, the former sugar factory of Lower Aragon had at the time some 350 workers who increased to 500 or 600 at the time of the beet campaign. This complex was, without a doubt, the heart and soul of Puebla de Hijar, the basis of its economy and the main engine of its prosperity. And on their land and installation is the infrastructure and the power to be it again.
